With the advent of its new director, Dr. Susan Santangelo, the Center for Psychiatric Research in the Maine Medical Center Research Institute has begun a new focus on biological psychiatry, particularly genetic risk factors underlying neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism. This may be best exemplified by the Autism Inpatient Collection study, a multi-site collaborative effort involving 6 specialized child psychiatry inpatient units treating children with autism and developmental disorders. In addition, the Institute is building on their renowned PIER Program (Portland Identification and Early Referral) to extend it’s effectiveness to youth at risk of mental disorders, while ensuring they continue to excel into the future, as residents engage in high level research projects with important results.
