Bioengineering for Advanced Materials Solutions (BEAMS)

At the US Army’s Combat Capabilities Development Command Chemical Biological Center, researchers are utilizing fundamental biotechnological discoveries to develop the advanced technologies of tomorrow, for the protection of the US military and allies. The Bioengineering for Advanced Materials Solutions group represents some of the most exciting work done at the center. By investing in synthetic biology, the group is an excellent position to solve some of the biggest materials challenges today. Research includes fundamental synthetic biology for the development of paper-based sensors, as well as the generation of novel carbon materials from genetically modified bacteriophages. The facilities available at the center as a whole also allow researchers to take the research to the next level, with a scale-up facility on site. From fundamental research through to large scale application, the CCDC CBC, and the BEAMS group, are having a major impact on the field of materials science, and the safety of the US Army and allies worldwide.
