The Quantum Matter Institute comprises a critical mass of internationally renowned investigators (16 faculty, to become 20 with 4 new ongoing hires) and builds upon a long-standing quantum materials research cluster at the University of British Columbia that is recognized as among the best in the world. QMI has had recurring success in attracting external research funding, and priority support from UBC. QMI’s research excellence was recognized in 2012 with the establishment of the Max Planck-UBC Centre for Quantum Materials and in 2014 with the establishment of the UBC Canada Excellence Research Chair in Quantum Materials and Devices. The QMI faculty has also benefitted tremendously from the few decade long connection with the Quantum Materials Program of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, and more recently with the EPiQS program of the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation (two QMI faculty are Moore funded EPiQS investigators).
