Resilient and Sustainable Coastal Infrastructure
Louisiana State University, Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering
More than 50% percent of the U.S. population lives within 50 miles of the shoreline. The infrastructure and environment in coastal areas within the US and around the world are subject to severe stresses induced by the continued population growth and pressure caused by climate change and sea level rise. Planning, designing and maintaining resilient and sustainable coastal infrastructure that is able to adapt climate change are a new grand challenge facing civil and environmental engineers today. Researchers in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Louisiana State University are working on developing new computer models, innovative field and laboratory observation technologies, and effective mitigation and adaption strategies to make coastal infrastructure, such as coastal bridges more resilient to extreme events, and more sustainable.
