Materials under Extreme Conditions
University of Tennessee, Knoxville
An important contributor to long-term sustainable energy options is anticipated to be fission and fusion energy. The development of new high performance materials for fission and fusion nuclear energy systems will be based on improved basic science understanding of materials behavior under extreme conditions. A diverse set of materials science researchers at University of Tennessee, Knoxville and Oak Ridge National Laboratory are teaming up to explore the structure and properties of materials under extreme fission and fusion-relevant conditions, develop robust science-based computational models, and to design improved materials for these environments.
