Space Communications Laboratory

The National Institute of Information and Communications Technology

The Space Communications Laboratory at Japan’s National Institute of Information and Communications Technology is a recognized world leader in space-based communications systems, with more than 25 years of experience in conducting cutting-edge research on satellite communications the lab holds many world-record achievements, including the establishment of the first satellite laser link in the world. The Space Communications Laboratory conducts research and development focusing on optical (laser) and radio frequency (RF) satellite communications. The laboratory has approximately 50 members including researchers, students, and supporting staff. Its objectives are to establish satellite communications to develop communication networks that can be used at sea, aerospace and in space, and be useful in mobile situations, and for disaster prevention and mitigation. The lab is currently engaged in a number of exciting research projects. The Wideband Inter-Networking engineering test and Demonstration Satellite (WINDS) project aims to establish the technologies needed for high data rate satellite communications, including its uninterrupted use on board moving vehicles or boats. The Small Optical TrAnsponder (SOTA) project is working to develop optical satellite communications technology for very small satellites, developing 6 kg-class ultra-compact optical communications equipment for demonstration on board small-sat SOCRATES. In addition, The Lab will be working on projects for JAXA’s Engineering Test Satellite (ETS) IX project, including high-capacity Ka band radio frequency (RF) communications as well as the High-speed Communication with Laser Instrument project (HICALI). NICT forms close ties with the academic and business communities in Japan as well as with research institutes overseas, while making sure its research is brought back to benefit society. In this way, NICT is making people’s lives safer and more productive, building a society that is full of intellectual creativity and dynamism, as well as a world that values harmony and peace.
