Bundeswehr University Munich - Space Research Center

IAC 2018

Bundeswehr University Munich trains Germany's top military officers, and is host to some of Europe's top facilities and expertise in aerospace and communications. At the same time, it's one of Germany top research universities, inviting civilian faculty and graduates students from all over the world. In this environment, a group of researchers came together to form the Space Research Center, combining talent in everything from space communications to plasma technology and navigation. Through highly interdisciplinary work, teams are able to put together challenging missions for the improvement of space technology, as well as our understanding of the universe. In the Lightweight Structures lab, undergraduates are working on FLOMESS, a small device able to measure strain and flight loads in rocket ascent. This is all to contribute towards a larger mission to test technology for the future of Mars exploration. The Plasma Technology lab is working on space propulsion down to the micronewton, helping to precisely position satellites in space. In the Navigation Lab, researchers are working on the design of Galileo's second generation of GPS, as well as more accurate navigation using Lidar. The Space Communications Lab are working at all frequency bands to improve communications to all parts of earth's atmosphere, and played a key role in a mission onboard ISS to test how signals are distorted when leaving earth's atmospher. In the Space Technology Lab researchers are doing full mission analysis as well as involvement radio science experiments including Rosetta and New Horizons. Bundeswehr University Munich is a great place to teach, and a great place to work on some of the top space research projects on offer in Europe, and the world, making a difference to everyone from anyone using GPS, to astronauts on the ISS.
