The Department of Molecular and Human Genetics embodies five decades of organized genetics activity at Baylor College of Medicine. Their mission is to transform medicine with the practice and science of genetics. The integrated research, clinical, and diagnostic activities now housed in the department have transformed the practice and science of genetics while expanding its role in medicine. The over 180 faculty bring together activities at the genetic clinics at Texas Children’s Hospital, the research laboratories and clinics at Baylor College of Medicine, and the diagnostic services at Baylor Miraca Genetics Laboratory.
The Department has led in translating new gene discoveries into targeted therapies by deep mechanistic understanding of disease. The Human Genome Sequencing Center as well as specialty research centers like the Neurological Research Institute have been leading engines of these discovery. In 2015, they continue to lead in the diagnostic setting by forming a joint venture with Miraca Holdings to establish the Baylor Miraca Genetics Laboratories. Ultimately, the innovation that has characterized the department continues to reside in their two greatest assets: our renowned faculty and trainees. www.bcm.edu
