Groundwater for the Future: Protecting our Water Savings Account.
Climate change is causing surface water availability to be increasingly uncertain and, in some cases, surface water is not available at all. Groundwater extraction has been (and will increasingly be) used as a solution to this uncertainty, but is often done in unsustainable ways. Population pressures also are causing water quality problems in groundwater which translates to drinking water and surface water quality impairment. Research is being performed to identify strategies to sustain our groundwater resources while meeting human and ecological needs for water in the face of global change.
