Ecole et Observatoire des Sciences de la Terre (School & Observatory of the Earth Sciences) University of Strasbourg / CNRS
Training, research and observation of the Earth from its surface to its core
The School and Observatory of Earth Sciences, in the heart of the University of Strasbourg, has a triple vocation of training, research and observation. The EOST research laboratories are interested in the Earth, from its surface to its core. 5 major themes are developed: the dynamics of continental surfaces, the question of water resources and fluid circulation in the context of global change, the access and the management of reservoirs and in particular geothermal resources, the dynamics of the lithosphere and especially seismicity and major earthquakes, and finally deep earth. All these research themes are developed from field, space observations or laboratory experiments, as well as numerous analog and numerical models. EOST operates field observatories in seismology, gravimetry, spatial geodesy, magnetism, environment, etc. These observatories are based in metropolitan France but also in Indian Ocean islands and Antarctica. EOST is also a training structure. 3 master's level courses are offered: in geophysics, with a strong theoretical background in mathematics, physics and computer science; in geology with numerous field experiences (Alps, Sudetenland, Massif Central); in environment with a focus on geochemical and hydrological methods. These training courses lead to professional integration in private or public companies, as well as to doctorates.
