The most effective way to promote health for the whole community is to increase the health of women and girls, to ensure safe motherhood and neonatal transition. The vision of the Department is to be an internationally recognised centre of excellence for academic Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Neonatal Paediatrics, and its Mission is to provide a high quality academic service across a broad range of clinical, educational and research activities within its associated teaching hospitals, and especially at its major centres, the Royal Women's Hospital, Parkville and the Mercy Hospital for Women, Heidelberg. Research at the Department is interdisciplinary and spans the life course from the prenatal period, through birth and the neonatal period; adolescence, safe reproduction, pregnancy and childbirth, women’s later life health. Our research collaborations extend nationally and internationally. Our clinical practice is closely aligned to our research and is focused on translational outcomes resulting in better health for neonates, girls and women. We propose through our basic and clinical research to ask and answer the major questions in women’s and newborn’s health, then translate our findings back through the cycle of education and change in clinical practice.
