Characterization and Advanced PIE Division at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL)
Unique Tools, Talent and Collaboration is Accelerating Development of Nuclear Technology at INL
Advanced reactor designs are being developed by many established vendors and technology startups. Many of those new reactors require new fuels and materials that must be tested and qualified using high-tech characterization tools capable of operating in high-radiation environments. Idaho National Laboratory’s Irradiation Materials Characterization Laboratory provides these unique tools, and as a national user facility, makes these tools available to nuclear researchers from across the nation and around the world. IMCL is home to the same state-of-the-art characterization instruments found at top-tier universities and industry research and development centers, and is uniquely configured to handle high-activity materials. It provides the most comprehensive nuclear material characterization capability in the United States. We have a simple goal; put the best minds together with the best research tools together to develop the next generation of nuclear energy materials.
