Growing faster than most towns in Pennsylvania, Chambersburg supplies more services than any other municipality in Pennsylvania. Chambersburg is the home to more municipal utilities than any other municipality in Pennsylvania. Chambersburg is one of 35 “Boroughs” to operate a municipal electric utility. Chambersburg is the largest municipal electric in the State, twice as large as the second largest and the only one to operate electric generation stations including a station that turns trash into electricity. Chambersburg is one of two municipalities in Pennsylvania to operate a natural gas utility; offering loans To allow residents to convert their homes to clean burning Pennsylvania Marcellus Shale gas. Chambersburg is one of 2,000 communities to have its own electric system and one of 800 communities to have a natural gas system but one of only about 50 to operate both. Chambersburg also manages a water system, a sanitary sewer system, a trash utility that does single stream and green yard waste recycling, and a new storm sewer utility; one of the first storm sewer utilities to form under the new Federal mandate to regulate stormwater. As the County Seat of Franklin County, Chambersburg is a large and diverse community. Sometimes dealing with city issues, Chambersburg Borough still maintains a small-town quality of life.
