Unique Location, Mountainous Research

James Madison University Department of Geology & Environmental Science

JMU is uniquely located within reach of the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. The area has the Blue Ridge Mountains to the east and the Allegheny Mountains to the west. The diversity and complexity of geology (lithology, age, structure) within an hour’s drive of JMU is spectacular. The University boast world-class facilities and a faculty that see research and education/teaching as integrated. Students benefit immensely from their research opportunities working closely with the faculty who offer a wide range of research expertise. Research is funded through a variety of partners including NSF, EDMAP and Research Corporation.
