InSPIRES is a cross-disciplinary initiative that aims to illuminate the multiple pathways to mental illness and resilience across the generations and over an individual’s life course. A goal is to identify the indicators for person-specific treatments and cures, which are seriously lacking, particularly for the psychoses. The intersecting research components of InSPIRES consider genetic and epigenetic factors and exposures linked to mental illness. In other studies we are deciphering the overlapping pathways to metabolic and mental disorders. To link the relevant etiologies and the indicators of optimal treatment, InSPIRES considers the biomarkers that are closest to brain disruption using state of the art novel neuroimaging approaches, cognitive studies, psychophysiology and biobehavioral measures. The group also collaborates with a unique group in anthropology that is aiming to forge a common language between the life science and humanities. Finally, InSPIRES is an important and training platform for graduate and medical students, residents, postdoctoral fellows and NIH funded K awardees.
